Regardless of where you live, your heritage has shaped a great deal of what your skin will do. For example, many people with Asian heritage may come to find that they tend to experience very common skin problems. Here are a few common skin complaints Asian patients report, designed to you better understand how to take care of your skin.
Oily Skin
Because of the warm climate in most Asian countries, their skin tends to be on the oily side. The sebaceous glands in certain people behave differently than other skin types. These glands are responsible for producing the oil on the skin.
Sensitive Skin
Asian patients are often acutely aware of their skin’s sensitivities. “This means the skin is more susceptible to environmental factors and chemicals,” explains Dr. Miriam Hanson, dermatologist and skin care expert at Sanova Dermatology. “It’s important to use products that compliment the skin, allowing you to attain your skin care goals, without irritating it.”
Acne
Because of excessive oils, skin of Asian patients may be more prone to acne. And with acne, you must also be cautious about scarring. It’s important to follow the right steps to help to eliminate acne before it can leave a scar. Be sure to not pick at it, which can also increase your risk of scarring.
Skin Discoloration
Asian skin is prone to discoloration. “Whether you have melasma, freckles or sun spots, you may come to find that your skin tone will change as you age,” notes Dr. Hanson. This is a problem that can be improved. “You can achieve a more even skin tone with chemical peels, IPL, and retinols. But as far as prevention, it’s crucial to always use sunscreen to help protect your sensitive skin.”
