What Are My Treatment Options For Acne Scarring?

Acne Treatment in Austin, TXAcne scars can seem unfair—if the pimples weren’t bad enough, the scars can persist to serve as a reminder. However, there are a variety of different therapies available for acne scar sufferers to treat their skin. A trip to the dermatologist is a great way to begin exploring these options and to discover which treatment is right for you.

Clinical Options

  • Laser Resurfacing: “This approach is one of the most effective for treating acne scarring,” explains Dr. Miriam Hanson, dermatologist and cosmetic expert at Sanova Dermatology. There are a variety of lasers available, and in general, they work by breaking up scar tissue and stimulating new collagen to be laid down under the skin.
  • Dermabrasion: “This process removes layers of skin and the underlying scar tissue through direct abrasion of the skin,” say Dr. Hanson. This is a fairly straightforward and simple process when performed by a licensed professional, and the healing process is fairly quick.
  • Microneedling: Micro-perforations break up scar tissue in the skin releasing the body’s own growth factors and healing mechanisms to lay down new collagen and improve the texture of the skin.
  • Chemical Peels: These peels remove the top layer of skin, which then regenerates to produce a smoother and more youthful appearance.

At Home Treatments

  • Exfoliators:  A variety of brushes and skin care preparations can be used to exfoliate the skin. “Exfoliation works like many other clinical options, removing dead skin cells to allow for the regeneration of healthier skin,” explains Dr. Hanson.
  • Vitamin A: topical over-the-counter retinol is a vitamin A derivative that has been shown to build collagen, lighten dark spots and blemishes, and improve tone and texture of the skin.
