In previous years, it had been thought that there was no correlation between nutrition, supplements, and common dermatological conditions. However, in recent years, studies have shown that diet, as well as nutrition and supplements, do enhance dermatologic treatments, and may even enhance the benefits of cosmetic procedures such as chemical peels, light therapy, and many others. These studies show that it is not only the products that you use topically, such as cleansers and creams but also food and supplements that play a role in a healthy complexion.

Feeding skin from the inside out has its benefits. Vitamins C, E, A, K, and B complex can all promote healthy skin by enhancing dermatologic treatment. Vitamins C and E can counteract the effects of sun damage, an all too common problem. By supplementing with natural vitamin E, one can reduce sun damage, wrinkles, and improve skin texture. A recent study shows that supplementing with vitamin C reduces the damage caused by free radicals, and also protects against DNA damage. Vitamin A can help prevent a dry, flaky complexion. It is the vitamin that is responsible for the maintenance and repair of skin tissue.

One of the most important supplements you can take for your skin is the vitamin B complex. A deficiency can lead to dermatitis, so make sure you are getting adequate amounts of B vitamins each day, either through supplements, or nutrition. You’ll find vitamin B in foods such as whole grain cereals, eggs, poultry, and bananas.

By getting adequate amounts of vitamin K, you can help prevent wrinkles, leaving your skin youthful and glowing. Studies show that vitamin K2 is essential for calcium metabolism.  K2 keeps skin taut by preventing calcification of elastin fibers that help skin defy gravity.  Vitamin K2 is found in fermented foods including brie and gouda cheese, natto (fermented soybeans) and sauerkraut. You’ll find that dark circles under the eyes are diminished, and redness and inflammation are under control as well.

The best thing you can do is to get your vitamins from a mix of supplements and healthy foods. By choosing foods such as salmon, watermelon, avocados, green tea, walnuts, kale, sunflower oil, and other vitamin-rich choices, you can provide “added insurance” for your skin and enhance the effects of dermatologic treatment with every meal!
