Sunscreen In Action | Should Austin’s Town Lake Have A Sunscreen Dispenser?

It has recently been reported that multiple hike and bike trails are now offering “sunscreen stations“, which offer free sunscreen to those who use the trails. Should every park need to invest in this life-saving resource?

“I think this sets the bar for outdoor recreation,” states Dr. Adam Mamleak, a board-certified Dermatologist and Mohs Micrographic Surgeon at Sanova Dermatology in Austin, Texas. As a strong advocate for skin cancer awareness, and having face-t0-face interaction with how the disease can change lives, Dr. Mamelak can truly see the importance for this resource. “There are countless times when I’ve noticed people jogging around town lake and you can tell they haven’t applied enough or any sunscreen.” Although it may seem like the tedious extra step when heading out for your run, it can be the difference between an unwelcome diagnosis and treatment, and a cancer-free life.

A sunscreen dispenser would also be beneficial to those who are already diligent about their sun protection, as it would only reinforce and continue to promote healthy behaviors. Reapplication of sun block is key, especially if spending the day outside. “Most sunscreens should be reapplied every 1-2 hours,” explains Dr. Mamelak.

“Whether it’s biking, running, or playing frisbee with your kids, the fact that such a valuable resource is free and available could really change peoples habits in a positive way,” emphasizes Dr. Mamelak. “We’ve already become accustomed to shade structures in playgrounds. This could be a very realistic next step.”

The month of May represents the beginning of summer, and a chance for dermatologists to remind their patients and the public about proper sun protection. With the office Skin Cancer Awareness month quickly approaching, along with ‘Melanoma Monday’ and ‘Don’t Fry Friday’, now is time to evaluate your skin cancer prevention routine.
