This is an extremely common skin condition affecting approximately 2% of the population in the world. Psoriasis can also be chronic, and can come and go throughout your lifetime.

Cause

Psoriasis is caused by inflammation in the skin that results in an increase on the skin layers in specific area on the body. While we do not know what causes this inflammation in the skin, psoriasis does tend to run in families, and often patients with psoriasis will have relatives who are affected by the disorder as well.

Psoriasis in Pflugerville, TX

Patients with psoriasis most commonly complain about discrete, circular-to-oval red thickened areas of skin, often with a dense, silver-white scale on top. Most often, these plaques of skin appear over the knees and elbows, as well as the scalp and lower back. Other types of psoriasis might just affect the scalp, palms and soles, or even appear like tiny rain drop (guttate) spots on the body.

The extent and duration of the psoriasis is highly variable from patient to patient, and up to 10-20% of patients with plaque psoriasis also experience joint pains and arthritis. Psoriasis has also been linked to metabolic syndrome, with increased rates of obesity and cardiovascular disease. Many patients with psoriasis are extremely self-conscious about their skin, and many try to cover up or avoid situations where their skin might be shown.

A number of therapies are available for treating psoriasis.
