Dermal fillers like Restylane are designed to aid in cosmetic procedures which improve the look and feel of the skin. Both Restylane Defyne and Restylane Lyft are made from a clear gel form of hyaluronic acid (or sugars naturally found in the skin which support skin elasticity and help provide hydration). “This gel is formulated to act like the hyaluronic acid your body naturally produces and thus has an extremely low risk of side-effects,” explains Emily Johnston, Physician Assistant at Sanova Dermatology.
How are These Fillers Different?
Most of the difference in these two products is in the areas they’re designed to target, rather than their actual composition.
“Restylane Defyne is designed to help the patient maintain a natural look through a range of facial expressions while smoothing out deeper lines and wrinkles in the skin,” Johnston explains.
Restylane Lyft is designed to focus more on the mid-face area and help restore lost volume to a patient’s cheeks as well as reducing the appearance of skin folds such as ‘smile lines’. Restylane Lyft is also formulated with a small percentage of lidocaine (0.3%) to help reduce discomfort.
How is one Selected Over the Other for Treatment?
Like most cosmetic procedures, dermal fillers are individualized to each patient’s concerns and need, and chosen primarily based off what areas are being addressed and what the patient feels is the most significant problem.
