Juvederm is a dermal filler used to fill in facial contour irregularities to impart a less wrinkled, more youthful appearance. “Dermal fillers are one of the best ways to restore volume lost from the skin as we age,” says Dr. Miriam Hanson, Cosmetic Dermatologist in Austin, Texas. The amount of volume and contour irregularities vary from patient to patient. Therefore, the amount of filler used on each person depends upon the magnitude of the patient’s problem, as well as upon other factors.
In order to determine the specific amount of Juvederm needed, each patient must be carefully evaluated by a professional who is specially trained in the administration of facial fillers. Only those with experienced with facial aesthetic procedures are qualified to properly formulate the necessary treatment plan to individually address each patient’s aesthetic goals and anatomic findings.
“It’s really about correction,” explains Dr. Hanson. “By determining how much correction a patient needs in a certain area relates to how much filler he or she might need.”
It may be possible to treat both the lower and upper lips with a single vial of Juvederm . In some cases there may be enough left to also treat chin and smile lines. However, this will only work effectively in those cases where the amount of correction is mild. Multiple syringes may be necessary for effective treatment when deeper lines and wrinkles are present, or when the amount of volume loss is more severe.
“Basically, the precise number of areas that can be treated with a full Juvederm syringe depends on the depth of the wrinkles, and the amount of enhancement a patient desires,” says Emily Johnston, certified physician assistant at Sanova Dermatology. “While we always try to be conservative with our treatments, we also have to be cautious not to spread our treatments too thin.”
If one syringe is used in too many areas, the effect will not be noticeable anywhere and the patient is more likely to be dissatisfied with the results. The ideal answer is to seek evaluation by an experienced injector and to discuss each specific situation to come up with a treatment that can adequately address each individual patient’s concerns in the most cost-effective way available.
