No matter how well you take care of your face, or how firm and trim you keep your body via regular exercise and a healthy diet, one thing that can always give your age away is your hands.
As the skin becomes thinner and loses its resiliency, the backs of your hands begin to show their true age. In effect they’ve lost the “plumpness” so inherent in youthful skin. “This volume loss and atrophy of the muscles in the hand, due to aging, typically results in overly prominent bones, tendons and veins. All signs of aging hands,” shares Jennifer Jordan, physician assistant at Sanova Dermatology in Austin, Texas.
Patients have used fillers, like Restylane®, to plump up cheeks and other areas of the face that have lost their youthful fullness, but historically, there’s been very little that could be done to remedy the same problem in hands. Until now.
Great News for Aging Hands — and Their Owners
The makers of Restylane® Lyft recently announced that the FDA has now approved Restylane® Lyft for use in hands. “This is thanks to a study involving 89 patients age 22 and over, which showed clinical improvement in the correction of loss of volume in the hands with results that last 6 months or longer,” explains Jordan. This is the first time any dermal filler has been approved by the FDA for use in an area other than the face, so this is monumental in the world of cosmetics.
How Fillers Like Restylane® Lyft Work
Restylane® Lyft is a dermal filler administered via injection and contains hyaluronic acid (aka HA), a substance that’s actually a part of skin’s natural moisture. “Skin aging is associated with loss of moisture, and thanks to its ability to store moisture, hyaluronic acid is responsible for giving skin a plump, hydrated look,” Jordan says.
