What Is Body Contouring?

Nowadays, minimally invasive procedures have come front and center in cosmetic medicine. “It’s very different from where we were 20 years ago,” says Dr. Adam Mamelak, board certified dermatologist and skin surgeon in Austin, Texas. “Surgery is often the patient’s the last resort.”  With minimal discomfort and downtime, it’s no wonder procedures like Botox, dermal fillers, peels, and laser have become so popular.

“It’s really the technology that has allowed us to do so much more,” says Dr. Miriam Hanson, a board certified Dermatologist and cosmetic expert at Sanova Dermatology in Austin. Who would have thought that we would be able to eliminate wrinkles with a simple injection, or remove scars without extensive surgery? “For the longest time, body contouring was one area that didn’t have a minimally invasive solution. Thankfully, technology has once again been developed to address this.” A non-invasive body contouring procedure can help people regain control over their appearance.

What Is Body Contouring?

Body contouring literally refers to modifying the shape of a person’s body. Corpo femminileThere are various types of body contouring procedures available, like those offered by Body Contouring in West Dundee, IL. This can range from surgical procedures like liposuction, tummy tucks, fat transfer and breast lifts.  Newer minor and non-surgical procedures like Kybella and CoolSculpting are now included in this category. “Just like you can use fillers like Juvederm and Restylane to restore volume and contour the face, these treatments can be used to modify and contour the shape of your body,” says  Dr. Hanson. CoolSculpting, for example, utilizes the ability to destroy fat cells by freezing them, thus allowing us to contour the abdomen, hips and other areas.

Why Body Contouring?

No matter what our weight, no matter how much diet or exercise we do, many of us have ‘stubborn areas’ that just don’t respond to traditional weight loss or training.”It might be the love handles or thighs, but many patients will have unwanted fat deposits that they just can’t get rid of,” explains Dr. Hanson.

“It’s not always about the perfect beach body,” says Dr. Mamelak. “Many patients are frustrated with how their clothes hang. They say they’re ‘in between’ sizes, or can’t find shirts or pants that fit them well.” Dr. Mamelak claims it’s not about being fat or skinny, it’s about shape. “Traditionally, liposuction and other surgical procedures were the only option for patients looking to sculpt there bodies. Newer, minimally invasive Body Contouring in West Bloomfield can now break down fat without the downtime and risks associated with surgery.

Is Body Contouring Right For Me?

“It’s probably the versatility of these procedures that is so attractive to patients,” says Dr. Hanson. “Some patients interested in CoolSculpting, for example, are struggling to lose their post-baby weight. Others may be at their ideal weight, but are looking for a finishing touch. They might already be committed to a training and gym routine, but need a little extra help to flatten their tummy or carve out on their waist line.” Still others candidates may have lost significant weight, but want to target specific areas that are not seeing the benefits of their efforts. Dr. Hanson does stress, however, that it’s not about weight, but having the right frame and figure that would lend itself well to treatment.

Whether it’s Kybella and CoolSculpting, patients of any size could potentially benefit from body contouring treatments. However, to find out if you are a good candidate for these procedures, it is best to consult your doctor for evaluation, e.g., Abdominoplasty in Exton, PA.
