Coolsculpting is a noninvasive technique that involves subjecting fat cells to a cooling process. The cooling breaks down the fat cells, which are them eliminated from the body, rendering them gone forever. Coolsculpting has been used to deal with belly fat, love handles, and bulges in the thighs.
A new device, called the New Coolsculpting “CoolMini”, has recently been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The device is used to eliminate smaller areas of fat, such as a double chin.
“In 2014, a survey conducted found 68% of people were bothered by the appearance of their double chin,” says Dr. Adam Mamelak, board certified dermatologist at Sanova Dermatology. “It’s not surprising that in response, we have seen a tremendous development in the treatment options for this condition this year.”
Not Exactly A Neck Warmer…
The approval of the Coolmini was granted on the basis of a clinical trial in which 60 patients, both male and female and ranging in age from 22 to 65, were treated with the Coolmini device. Each patient in the trial received between one and two treatments six weeks apart under the chin. As a result, an average of 20 percent of the fat under the chin was eliminated. No adverse results were observed, and patients experienced little or no discomfort and downtime.
Chin fat presents a particular problem for people who have it. Unlike fat in other areas of the body, it cannot be concealed or covered with clothing. A double chin can result from lifestyle, genetics, or aging.
“Previously, surgery was really the only option for patients looking to eliminate their double chin,” explains Dr. Miriam Hanson, board certified dermatologist in Austin, Texas. “Minimally invasive treatments like Kybella and Coolsculpting have become increasingly popular to treat these patients.”
Coolsculpting is considered superior to other fat removal techniques, such as liposuction, because it is not only noninvasive but does not require a recovery period and does not have any ill effects such as surgical scarring. Millions of Coolsculpting procedures have been performed in 70 countries. Market research reports that the procedure has a 93 percent patient satisfaction rate.
