If you’ve heard about the chin fat-busting treatment Kybella, it might be because of Khloe Kardashian. The Hollywood starlet is the public face of the product; earlier this year she was announced as Kybella’s spokeswoman. But there’s much more to Kybella than appearances. The product is a Food and Drug Administration-approved treatment backed by years of research and studied in more than 2,600 participating in 20 clinical trials.
Kybella is an injectable treatment that clears away fat from the chin. “It’s comprised of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that has a role in breaking down dietary fat,” notes Dr. Adam Mamelak, a board certified Dermatologist in Austin, Texas. A trained medical professional will administer Kybella as a series of injections under the chin. Those injections are typically done under local anesthesia.
The treatment can vary depending on the individual, but anywhere from three to six treatment sessions may be administered to a patient, four to eight weeks apart. The number of Kybella treatments before obtaining the desired result will vary from one person to another, based on the desired chin size. But many patients will obtain the desired results even after two treatment sessions.
Kybella will cause the destruction of fat cells in the chin, which means they will no longer be able to store fat. Compared to other procedures, there are few side effects with Kybella, which can include swelling or light bruising. The chin-slimming effects of Kybella won’t be apparent right away, and it can take a few weeks to see the full results of each treatment session. “Patients should expect begin to see results as early as a week after treatment and should anticipate a continued tightening over a 3 month period,” shares Dr. Mamelak. That wait should be worth it. After the desired chin profile is achieved, no additional Kybella treatment should be needed.
