Dr. Mamelak nationally recognized for Skin Cancer Awareness contributions by the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery

The American Society of Dermatological Surgery (ASDS) has recently recognized Dr. Adam Mamelak as a Choose Skin Health Top Screener for 2013 for performing more skin cancer screenings than any other physician in his region. The region is composed of 9 states, including Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama. As the largest specialty organization in the US, the ASDS is composed of leading dermatologic surgeons who are recognized for their innovations and commitment to the field of dermatology.

As a skin cancer specialist, Dr. Mamelak is committed to fighting the increasing rates of skin cancer. Skin cancer does not discriminate – it affects both young and old, and individuals from all backgrounds. The signs of skin cancer can vary. A new growth or changing mole, a sore that doesn’t heal, a spot with multiple colors, or even sensation changes such as itchy or bleeding can all signify the development of a malignancy in the skin. Skin cancer has a high survival rate especially if caught at an early stage – all the more reason why an annual skin cancer screening is important to our overall health.

To treat skin cancer, Dr. Mamelak performs Mohs surgery, a specialized technique that removes skin cancer with an over 99% cure rate. During Mohs surgery, layers of cancerous tissue are progressively taken away while leaving intact as much healthy tissue as possible, until all the malignant disease is removed.

Prevention is key to halting the development of skin cancer. Protect yourself against skin cancer by avoiding direct sun exposure and protecting yourself against harmful UV rays with hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and protective clothing when outdoors. Our skin is the largest organ in our body and the first line of defense against harmful materials. It is important to practice these habits even on overcast days because harmful sun rays can travel through the clouds.

Book your skin cancer screening today with Dr. Mamelak or one of our experienced dermatologists at Sanova Dermatology.
