Everyone has had a few acne breakouts throughout their lifetime. However, in more severe cases, acne can become chronic and cause bigger issues for an individual. Sometimes, over-the-counter medications and face washes just don’t cut it. “Acne can be embarrassing and painful,” mentions Donna Vial, a certified physician assistant at Sanova Dermatology in Lafayette, Louisiana. It can leave permanent scars and impact someone’s confidence. Dermatologists can help by treating existing acne, preventing new breakouts, and reducing your chance of developing scars. Here are some ways dermatologists treat acne:
Hormonal Therapy
If you’re experiencing stubborn acne, it might be due to hormones. The FDA has approved some oral contraceptives for treating acne. “These medications have been found effective at treating blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and acne nodules and cysts,” notes Vial. Spironolactone is also a prescription used for hormonal acne that decreases breakouts by reducing oil and starts working in a few weeks.
Isotretinoin
This medication is used to treat severe and cystic acne that is not responding to other treatments. “Isotretinoin reduces oil production, prevents clogged pores, reduces acne-causing bacteria, and minimizes inflammation,” Vial shares. High amounts of facial oil, also known as sebum, can result in severe acne. If left untreated could result in permanent scarring in affected areas.
Injections
Steroid injections can be used for acne that is below the skin, which results in painful lumps, nodes, or cysts. “These are great for deep-rooted acne but are not a treatment for widespread acne,” explains PA Vial.
Retinoid Drugs
If you’re dealing with mild acne, a dermatologist can prescribe you a topical cream, gel, or lotion. These are typically used for treating blackheads and whiteheads. The dermatologist's retinoids are typically stronger than over-the-counter retinoids. “These are a great way to treat acne without the harsher side effects from the other treatment options,” Vial says
