Sclerotherapy is an injection treatment designed to treat spider veins, which occur when blood pools in the veins. These thin, blue, or purlpe veins most often occur on the legs and feet, though they may also be seen on the chest, face, or hands.
Sclerotherapy closes off the affected veins, leading them to gradually fade and disappear.
During sclerotherapy, the affected veins are injected with a solution that causes the veins to painlessly collapse. The collapsed veins are reabsorbedby your normal tissue, and the blood is recirculated through healthier veins.
This procedure is performed in-office and doesn't require anasthesia. Using a fine needle, your dermatologist will inject each vein with the solution. You might notice light cramping during or after the injections, but this can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. Treatment usually takes less than 30 minutes.
After the injections, your provider may place compression tape or stockings on the treated area.
