When to consider mole removal
Moles are usually no problem. However, there are situations where you should consider having one removed:
- If a mole changes shape, starts to grow, itches, or bleeds; these symptoms could be an indication of skin cancer and need to be evaluated.
- If you feel the mole is unattractive, such as one on the face or neck.
- If the mole is in an awkward location where clothing or daily activity causes it to rub, feel uncomfortable, or bleed.
What to expect during mole removal?
Removal by an experienced dermatologist is usually a single, in-office treatment. Your doctor will numb the area with a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort and then remove the mole surgically. This can be performed by either a shave technique or an excision with stitches.
If there is any concern with cancer, the mole will be biopsied (sent to a lab for further evaluation).
