What is dermatosis papulosa nigra?

Dermatosis papulosa nigra (DPN) is a common, harmless skin condition causing small, dark brown or black bumps. The main site of appearance is on the face, though they may also occur on the neck, chest, or back. It's most common in people with darker skin tones and typically appears in the late teens, with the spots often becoming more numerous in the twenties and thirties.

How is dermatosis papulosa nigra treated?

Treatment is not necessary except if they bother the patient from a cosmetic point of view. These spots can be removed in a number of ways. They can either be removed by laser therapy, scraping or cutting the spots off (excision), or with an electric needle. There is always a minimal risk that a mark can be left at the site when the spots are removed.
