What are chemical peels?

Administered by our skilled and experienced skin care professionals, chemical facial peels safely improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, acne and acne scars, and dark spots. Peels are most often used on the face, but the neck, chest, and hands can also be treated to refine skin texture, tone, and coloration.

Types of chemical peels

  • Light peels: Utilizes mild acids like glycolic acid to gently exfoliate the surface layer of the skin. Ideal for mild skin discolorations, rough texture, maintenance between stronger peels, and for those with sensitive skin.
  • Medium peels: More aggressive and penetrate deeper into the skin, effective for treating fine surface wrinkles, superficial blemishes, and pigmentation issues. May combine ingredients like lactic acid, salicylic acid, or resorcinol, targeting deeper exfoliation to remove damaged skin cells and improve overall skin tone and texture.
  • Deep peels: Penetrate the lower dermal layer of the skin to treat more significant skin issues, such as deeper wrinkles and scars. They offer dramatic results but require more significant recovery time.

Benefits of chemical peels

Chemical peels are highly customizable, allowing us to create a tailored treatment that can deliver a variety of cosmetic and skin health benefits. Potential benefits include:

  • Skin rejuvenation: Promotes new skin growth which results in a brighter, clearer, and more youthful appearance.
  • Improved texture and tone: Helps to smooth rough textures and even out skin tone, including reducing the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
  • Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles: The exfoliating effect can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Acne and scar treatment: Peels can effectively reduce acne breakouts and diminish the appearance of acne scars.

What to expect during a chemical peel?

You’ll start with a consultation so your dermatologist can understand your goals and examine your skin. Your peel session will begin by making sure you're comfortable and prepping the area to be treated.

The peeling solution is applied and your progress is continually monitored. The peel will be removed at precisely the right time to ensure the results you desire. A cool compress might be used to soothe your skin, if necessary, and a mild, hypoallergenic cream or lotion may be applied afterward.

Ready for brighter, clearer, smoother skin? Schedule a consultation today at one of our convenient locations. We have offices across Texas, including Houston, Pflugerville, Austin, Bee Cave, and Dripping Springs, and Louisiana, with offices in Metairie, Old Metairie, Uptown New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

CHEMICAL PEELS CAN HELP WITH THESE CONDITIONS:

After a chemical peel, it's common to experience redness, swelling, tightness, and a warm or tingling sensation, similar to a sunburn. Peeling typically starts around day 3 and lasts for a week or so.

As you heal, within a week for a superficial treatment, one to two weeks for a medium peel, you’ll see lovely new skin emerge. We provide instruction on how to care for your skin following treatment, including cleansing, what products to use, sun protection, avoiding smoking, and advice on when you may begin wearing makeup. The duration of your results depends on how you care for your skin and environmental factors.

A chemical facial peel uses glycolic acid (found naturally in sugar crops), salicylic acid (which comes from willow bark), and/or other specially formulated solutions to remove layers of skin.
