What are dysplastic nevi?

Moles are considered dysplastic if they have abnormal features when examined under the microscope. The presence of a dysplastic mole, especially multiple of them, may put an individual at increased risk for developing skin cancer.

Dysplastic moles can have the following characteristics:

  • The moles are larger than an average mole.
  • The moles are irregular in:
    • Color – Frequently there are various shades of tans, browns, blacks, and reds
    • Outline – Frequently the moles are irregular in outline and may be jagged.

How are dysplastic moles treated?

Dysplastic moles don't typically need treatment unless a biopsy reveals cancer or pre-cancerous changes. In that case, your dermatology provider may remove the mole with either:

  • Excision
  • Mohs surgery

If you're concerned about a mole or growth, schedule a full-body skin check with one of our board-certified dermatologists across Texas (Houston, Pflugerville, Austin, Bee Cave, Dripping Springs) or Louisiana (Metairie, Old Metairie, Uptown New Orleans, Baton Rouge).

When looking at your skin for atypical moles, check and see if your moles have: Asymmetry, irregular Borders, multiple Colors, a Diameter greater than 6mm (the size of a pencil eraser), or any other Evolution or change. These ABCDE’s are used to identify irregular growths on the skin, including melanoma.

If you have dysplastic nevi, your dermatologist may recommend getting a full-body skin check more than once a year.
