Psoriasis is chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by thick, itchy patches or plaques of skin. They typically appear red, silvery, and/or scaly. It's an extremely common condition affecting approximately 2% of the worldwide population. Psoriasis can be chronic, and it can also come and go throughout your lifetime.
Most often, these plaques of skin appear over the knees and elbows, as well as the scalp and lower back. Other types of psoriasis might just affect the scalp, palms, and soles, or even appear like tiny rain drop (guttate) spots on the body.
The extent and duration of psoriasis is highly variable from patient to patient. Up to 10-20% of patients with plaque psoriasis also experience joint pains and arthritis. Psoriasis has also been linked to metabolic syndrome, with increased rates of obesity and cardiovascular disease.
What causes psoriasis?
Psoriasis is caused by skin inflammation that results in an increase of skin layers in specific areas of the body. While we do not know what causes this inflammation in the skin, psoriasis does tend to run in families, meaning there may be a genetic component.
