What pediatric dermatology conditions do we treat?

Our team of board-certified dermatologists have deep experience treating dermatological conditions in children, including but not limited to:

  • Eczema: Extremely common itchy skin inflammation caused by environmental and hereditary factors. About 1 in 5 children suffer from eczema. While most children will outgrow their eczema, flare-ups and stubborn patches can cause a great deal of distress and discomfort. The right skin regimen, frequent and liberal use of moisturizers, and intermittent use of prescription medications can clear up those red scaly patches, helping your child to stop scratching and rest easy.
  • Diaper rash: Diaper rash occurs in most babies before they are toilet trained. Usually this eruption results from the irritation the wet or dirty diaper can cause on the skin. However, a yeast or localized fungal infection can sometimes complicate matters, resulting in redness, scaly skin, pimples, or even eroded areas under the diaper. Keeping the baby changed, clean, and dry is the best prevention. Your dermatologist can provide many more tips to avoid diaper rash, and prescription topical creams if needed.
  • Molluscum contagiosum: Fleshy-colored, itchy bumps called molluscum contagiosum are common in children in day care and those starting school. These bumps are caused by a virus that infects the skin and often clears up on its own. The virus is not harmful to your child’s health, but to avoid risk of spreading or secondary infection from scratching, your dermatologist can treat these lesions with a variety of methods.
  • Warts: Small, rough growths that can develop on any part of the body are caused by the human papillomavirus. Your body will eventually fight off and get rid of the wart virus, but this can take some time. The warts can also spread by contact, so it’s best to have warts treated with topical applications or cryotherapy.
  • Acne: Acne can develop at any age, but triggered by hormonal changes, pre-teens and teenagers are frequent sufferers. Untreated acne can result in lifelong scarring. An early treatment plan with topical medications, oral antibiotics, and anti-inflammatories minimizes flare-ups.
  • Birthmarks: Caused by an overgrowth of pigmentation or blood vessels that are not generally painful. However, they can cause a great deal of self-consciousness for a child and in certain instances, your physician might recommend treatment. Treatment with dermatologic laser technology and precise skin surgery can be used to ensure the safe removal of your child`s birthmark.
