How Azelaic Acid Benefits Our Skin

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

What is Azelaic Acid?

Azelaic acid is an organic compound that is naturally produced by a type of yeast found normally on our skin. “This compound is used to treat acne, rosacea and hyperpigmentation disorders such as melasma,” shares Dr. Miriam Hanson, dermatologist and skin care expert at Sanova Dermatology. in Austin, Texas. “It has several effects on our skin making a potent agent to treat a number of skin disorders.”

How Can It Help My Skin?

1. One affect of azelaic acid is its antimicrobial properties. “This compound is able to reduce bacterial growth on our skin by decreasing keratin production, a substance that promotes bacterial growth,” says Dr. Hanson. Unlike some topical antibiotics there is no evidence of microbial  resistance can develop with azelaic acid. This make azelaic acid a great topical option of the treatment of acne and rosacea.

2. “Azelaic acid is also useful for it’s anti-inflammatory properties which help to decrease redness and swelling associated with many skin blemishes,” notes Dr. Hanson. The exact mechanism is unknown but it is believed to decrease the specific skin peptides, such as LL-37, that are directly involved in causing inflammation. Scientists have found elevated levels of LL-37 in those suffering from rosacea.

3. Azelaic acid is beneficial for hyperpigmentation of the skin. Azelaic acid inhibits tyrosinase, an enzyme responsible for the production of melanin. “Melanin is a natural pigment that gives color to our hair, skin and eyes,” explains Dr. Hanson. The greater the amount of melanin in the skin, the darker the appearance of the skin. By decreasing the amount of melanin you are able to decrease the level of pigmentation in the skin.

In summary, Azelaic acid is naturally produced on our skin that has several beneficial properties for our skin’s overall appearance. These effects include antimicrobial properties, anti-inflammatory properties and decreasing hyperpigmentation and discoloration, making azelaic acid a great option for those suffering from acne, rosacea and melasma.
