Is Thanksgiving turkey friend or ‘fowl’ for the skin?

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

“It’s a question on all our minds,” says Dr. Miriam Hanson, board-certified dermatologist and skin care expert at Sanova Dermatology in Austin, Texas. “At this time of year, it seems everyone is talking turkey.”

While so much of this holiday is all about getting together with family and reflecting on the things we are thankful for, it is also a time we can over indulge on all the great treats on the Thanksgiving table.

We know that too many sweets can be detrimental to our complexion, with acne breakouts and spots. But nowadays, turkey seems to be on everyone’s mind. So which way does this bird fly? Is turkey friend or ‘fowl’ for our skin?

Whether it’s baked, fried, roasted or barbecue – turkey actually has a high concentration of riboflavin and zinc. Zinc is integral in protein production in the body, and maintaining collagen and elastin fibers in the skin. It’s the collagen and elastin that give the skin it’s firmness and elasticity, and contributes to a youthful appearance. The selenium in turkey is used by our bodies to repair cells and in tissue growth.

Not a leg man? Or maybe you prefer the  vegetarian option? Well those sweet potato sides are packed with beta carotene – a potent protector against sun damage for the skin.

But if you’re really looking for an antioxidant boost, don’t forget about cranberries!  “Antioxidants quench the free radicals, by products of our bodies metabolism and other stresses such as smoking, sun exposure and pollution that damage and age our skin.” The potent antioxidant power in cranberries can help care for your skin and keep it looking young and vibrant.

All these great foods with such great skincare attributes, now is really a time to be thankful for our skin.
