Staying Dry: How to Avoid Sweat Stains on Clothing

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

Excessive underarm sweating can be both embarrassing and uncomfortable. Whether due to hormonal changes or the overactivity of sweat glands known as hyperhidrosis, the condition can stain clothing and make those affected feel self-conscious. If untreated, excessive sweat can also lead to rashes and irritated skin due to prolonged moisture exposure.

Stains

The first line of defense against underarm sweating is a strong antiperspirant and deodorant, but many people find the relief minimal or short-lived, requiring additional applications several times a day. An even bigger problem is the stains. Many stains can result form the chemicals in aluminum-based antiperspirants themselves, not solely the sweat!

Solutions

Vinegar? Baking soda? Crushed Asprin? Maybe hydrogen peroxide and vodka?

“Most days, I find I’m better with skin care advice than laundry,” says Dr. Miriam Hanson, board-certified dermatologist at Sanova Dermatology in Austin, Texas. “When patients have problems with sweating, whether sweating excessively, odor issues, or embarrassment because of it, I find it more effective to address the problem then its consequences.”

Dr. Hanson uses a variety of approaches to treat unwanted sweating and odor. Robinul and Botox injections are reliable treatments for reducing sweating. A more effective option is the miraDry® treatment, a non-invasive procedure that can target the sweat glands of problem areas. “Not only does miraDry deliver results after as little as one treatment, but the effects are permanent.”

The miraDry® Procedure

To perform the miraDry® procedure, the treatment area is numbed with a local anesthetic. The miraDry® hand piece is applied to the armpit skin and electromagnetic heat is administered to the skin with minimal discomfort. This heat permanently eliminates the activity of sweat glands. The treatment generally takes less than an hour to complete, providing immediate relief from armpit perspiration. Patients can occasionally experience temporary swelling or bruising, but can expect to resume full normal daily activities within days.

If antiperspirants are not sufficient to correct the irritating and uncomfortable sweating associated with hyperhidrosis, miraDry® can be an effective option to remove underarm perspiration entirely. By preventing sweat stains on clothing to improving comfort and confidence, treatment can provide significant quality-of-life improvements. “Because the underarms account for less than 2% of the body’s sweat glands, the body’s ability to regulate temperature is not effected, making the procedure safe with no long term side effects,” says Dr. Hanson.
