What’s the Difference Between IPL and Laser Therapy for Skin Treatments?

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

When you are looking for different skin treatments, you may come across a wide variety of solutions. It’s important to understand which one to use. So what’s the difference between IPL and Laser therapy for skin treatments?

What is IPL?

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is used for a variety of treatments. For example, an IPL can be used for hair removal, acne, and more commonly for pigmentation problems such as dark spots and small veins. It works by using a bright light, with filters in front of it. These filters allow the effective light to shine through and treat the targeted area.

“This treatment method is different from a laser, in which the medical professional uses a single wavelength of light,” shares Emily Johnston, dermatology certified-Physician Assistant at Sanova Dermatology in Austin, Texas. IPL is very effective at treating pigmentation problems and has minimal downtime. Because it uses a broad spectrum of light, it focuses on what light will help to achieve the best results. Redness and age spots can be treated effectively, and it usually requires a series of treatments, similar to laser therapy.

What is Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy describes a single wavelength of light being used in order to remove warts, moles, birthmarks, sunspots, hair, and tattoos. It can even help to improve the look of wrinkles, blemishes, or scars. This treatment works by using a very powerful single beam of light to target an area.

In the case of hair removal, it will damage the hair follicle, which causes hair to not regrow in that area. This treatment method is generally effective and produces excellent results.

When you are about to undergo either of these skin treatments, you should let your specialist guide you through the process. “Your skin tone and hair color will play a big part in determining which method is best for you, your aesthetic goals and getting the best results,” Emily explains.
