Why Did My Doctor Prescribe Doxycycline Antibiotic For My Acne?

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

When you have acne, you can feel as if there is no hope. Too often, you’ve used washes that have dried out your skin without really helping your acne both go away and stay away. So you may wonder, why did my doctor prescribe doxycycline antibiotic for my acne?

What Does Doxycycline Do?

“In general, this antibiotic is used to treat bacterial infections in the body,” explain Dr. Kellie Reed, a board certified Dermatologist at Sanova Dermatology. There are a number of different things that contribute to the development of acne lesions. A bacteria called P. acne that lives deep inside the pores is one of these causative agents. “Doxycycline, and other members of the tetracycline family of antibiotics like minocycline, selectively target these bacteria in the skin, and are effective against several types of acne.” This medication also possess anti-inflammatory effects, and therefore works particular well for inflammatory acne lesions.

Patients that produce papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts may benefit from antibiotic therapy.  “Doxycycline works form the inside out,” says Dr. Reed. Many times, the acne forms lumps under the skin, and can be painful and tender to the touch. They can be very difficult to treat with topical acne medications, and require more healing from within.

For individuals who suffer from inflammatory acne, finding relief can be difficult physically and emotionally. Fortunately, this antibiotic can help by providing the body an additional weapon in the fight against acne.

Of course using doxycycline antibiotic is not the only way to combat acne. It can be used in combination with a topical treatment, or better as part of an individualized skin care regimen. Also, doxycycline does have some side effects and should only be used under the care and guidance of a qualified health care provider. Your dermatologist can advise you on the perfect combination to win your battle against acne.
