Will A Chemical Peel Help My Acne?

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

Acne is an unwanted guest on many people’s faces, and sometimes over the counter remedies, topical creams and antibiotic treatments don’t do the trick. “It’s not just the acne,” says Dr. Miriam Hanson, dermatologist and skin care expert in Austin, Texas. “I probably have as many patients ask about the marks left behind after the acne resolves, than I do who struggle with acne itself.” Luckily, there’s other options available on your path to acne recovery. Chemical peels are known for their ability to renew a dull complexion and improve skin tone and textural irregularities. These in-office treatments are also effective for acne.

“Stubborn acne is not something to let get you down,” Dr. Adam Mamelak, dermatologist at Sanova Dermatology shares. “Chemical peels are a valid approach for treating acne breakouts.” A single peel, or series, can help alleviate the stress and visibility of acne. During the peel, glycolic acid (found naturally in sugar crops), salicylic acid (which comes from willow bark), and/or other specially formulated solutions are applied to the skin. Their intense exfoliating actions remove the top layers of the skin, opening up pores and allowing these specialized solutions to penetrate deep into the acne glands to exert their effects.

“With different strengths and preparations, we can really fine tune these treatments to ensure our patients get the results they are looking for,” says Dr. Hanson.

After the peel, the skin regenerates and fresh new skin layers are produced with fewer breakouts and blemishes. Spots and discoloration fade and unclogged pores allow better penetration of your acne creams and cleansers.

A chemical peel is a great option if you feel that you are not seeing results from your acne current treatment. The after-effects of the treatment can not only leave your skin looking clear, but give you a more positive outlook on daily life.
