4 Halloween Skin Tips!

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

Halloween festivities are in full ‘moon’! But as you dawn your cat ears or transform yourself into a creature from another planet, beware of skin irritations due to fabrics, makeup, or treats.

1. If you wouldn’t wear it normally, don’t make a Halloween exception!

We don’t mean to deter you from being Ironman or a Pretty Kitty, but when it comes to makeup it is important to think about how strategically you select your daily skincare. “Contact Dermatitis can be a large concern on holidays like Halloween where we tend to overwhelm out skin with an abundance of new and foreign products and fabrics,” mentions Dr. Miriam Hanson, a board-certified Dermatologist in Austin, Texas. So before you apply the whiskers, take a little consideration into what is in that vibrant face-paint. A good alternative to the cheaper makeup is to find a higher quality theater makeup.

2. That goes for costumes as well…

“Many people don’t realize that they are allergic to certain materials or fabrics until they try them on,” mentions Dr. Hanson. This is important to think about when you are stopping at your costume shop to make your selection. “You will come into contact with a large variety of materials, which can potentially trigger a reaction,” she continues. Common allergies include latex and nickel, which can be used to create costumes or masks.

3. Candy may bite back!

A sweat treats may be more welcome than a tricks or two, but best keep in mind any food allergies that you may have. “Peanuts, Wheat, and Soy can all be found in Halloween goodies, and these are some of the most common food allergies that can lead to skin rashes,” notes Dr. Hanson. It is important to know that you can trust where you are getting your goodies from, and take those allergies into consideration. Signs of these allergies can be a tightening of the throat, redness of the skin, itchy patches, and inflammation.

4. Avoid the graveyards

Haunted forests, graveyards and cemeteries can hold more than just ghosts and goblins. That’s why this all hallow’s eve, you need to be careful where we trespass as the wrong turn could lead to serious complications with your skin. “Coming into contact with plants can lead to conditions such as poison ivy and  plant dermatitis,” says Dr. Hanson. Bug bites are also things to be concerned about when spending your haunting holiday outdoors.
