Blepharoplasty one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the United States. The procedure is designed to help correct defects, deformities, or disfigurements of the eyelids. “All of our eyelids tend to sag and droop over time and as we age,” says Dr. Adam Mamelak, dermatologist and skin surgeon at Sanova Dermatology in Austin, Texas. “In some people, this sagging skin can make us look older, or even interfere with our peripheral vision.”
Blepharoplasty helps to correct these things by repositioning, and removing excess tissues. The surrounding muscles and tendons can also be strengthened in order to improve the look and functionality of the area around the eye. “If the skin of the eyelid has been damaged or sags in a way that restricts vision, or otherwise causes strain on the eye, an upper blepharoplasty may be a solution,” explains Dr. Mamelak. Drooping or sagging upper lids may also block vision and can be corrected with an upper lid blepharoplasty.
Drooping or sagging eyelids often age the face. Making the eyes appear larger by lessening the upper lid also contributes to a more open, youthful look.
“An eyelid tuck focuses solely on the skin around the eyes,” says Dr. Mamelak. “It is important to determine if it is this skin that is causing the problem, or a heavy brow.”
Both lax eyelid skin and a heavy brow can cause the eyes to look narrow and our face to look older. Your doctor should evaluate what is causing the greatest contribution to your drooping eyelids – the eyelid skin, the brow, our both.
