Sculptra is a remarkable weapon in our arsenal for the war against aging skin. It actually helps restore some of the collagen that your body isn’t producing at the levels it did in younger years. “Sculptra is really unique when it comes to restoring volume in the skin,” says Dr. Adam Mamelak, dermatologist and cosmetic expert at Sanova Dermatology in North Austin. “It is considered a semi-permanent filler, and works by actually inducing the body to produce and lay down new collagen in the skin.” Though it can take more time than Hyaluronic Acid fillers for the full effect to be complete, it is worth the wait. The volume can last two years or more, and most find the results stunning.
Those who are immunocompromised or who suffer with autoimmune* problems should not consider Sculptra. *(Conditions and diseases that erroneously attack your healthy tissues, such as MS, Lupus, vasculitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and others)

Sculptra is not ideal for those who are prone to keloid formation, which is simply an overgrown scar, most often found in those with darker skin. Likewise, a history of hypertrophic scarring would preclude a patient from using Sculptra. In both cases, the body “overheals” and produces too much tissue around the site of an injury or a surgical site. This is an excess amount of collagen and therefore would not be beneficial considering Sculptra causes the production of collagen. These are, however, conditions that we can treat for you.
If you are taking blood thinners, aspirin other anti-inflammatories and medications, it is important to discuss these with your dermatologist at Re-Nu Aesthetics to insure it is OK to proceed with your Sculptra treatment.
“Sculptra provides robust volume when injected into the skin,” explains Dr. Mamelak. Therefore, patients that require significant volume to achieve their aesthetic goals are the best candidates.
Traditionally, patients who’s profiles have been affected by significant weight and volume loss have benefited the most from Sculptra injections. “I find Sculptra works particularly well in older patients, as well as men, when injected into the face,” says Dr. Mamelak. “However, newer techniques and applications of this filler have made Sculptra so much more versitile.”
Dr. Mamelak uses these new techniques to firm sagging skin on the arms and around the knees, add volume to the neck and decolletage area where skin can thin, and finally, in combination with microneedling and fractionated laser resurfacing treat acne scars and improve skin texture.
Patients who understand that collagen is induced over time with Sculptra, and who cooperate with self-massage after treatment, are the happiest with Sculptra. Over time, you will see improvements in volume, contour and reduction of lines and wrinkles, and no one will ask you if you had a facelift.
