Benefits of Low Dose Accutane Therapy

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

Accutane (Isotretinoin) is a Vitamin A derivative that has been touted as a miracle drug for the treatment of moderate to severe acne. “This oral pill opens pores in the skin and shrinks oil glands,” explains Emily Johnston, certified physician assistant at Sanova Dermatology. The shrinkage of the glands helps clear up the acne cysts and prevents new ones from forming. The top surface of the skin also flakes off to remove whiteheads and blackheads for a clear, smooth skin appearance.

Since its release, Accutane has really revolutionized the treatment of acne, curing patients almost permanently about 70 percent of the time. “Unfortunately, the high doses of the medication usually prescribed can have considerable side effects,” explains Emily. Because Accutane needs to accumulate to be effective, elevated dosages of the drug are often prescribed to keep the course of treatment at 4 to 6 months.

In recent years, the medical community  have started to prescribe low dose Accutane therapy for the treatment of acne. “The lower doses reduce the likelihood of side effects, but the results in improving acne breakouts and complexion remain the same,” explains Dr. Kellie Reed, board certified dermatologist in Austin, Texas.  Studies have shown that the use of low-dose Accutane therapy was found to be a very effective treatment for moderate to severe acne. “The patients experienced only low incidences of side effects, and much easier to tolerate.”
