Botox vs. Dysport: What’s the difference?

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

People with concerns about forehead lines, brow furrows, or crow’s feet are likely aware of BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, but not everyone has heard of Dysport®, also an FDA-approved drug for the treatment of brow furrows. So which one is right for you? Our expert cosmetic providers have everything you need to know to compare BOTOX® and Dysport® treatments.

Dysport® and How It Works

“Dysport® is a type of botulinum toxin injection, just as BOTOX® is, but there are differences in the potency of trace proteins and the treatment areas of each prescription,” explains Dr. Kimberly Finder, board-certified dermatologist at Sanova Dermatology – San Antonio Medical Center. If your main area of concern is a moderate to severe furrow between your eyebrows, Dysport® may be a more effective injection. The glabella lines, often called “ones,” or “elevens”, extend vertically from between the eyebrows toward the forehead, and are a result of frowning and lost collagen as we age. Typical treatments last only minutes, with .05mL injected in up to five areas around your eyebrows and forehead. Dysport® blocks the signals from the brain to the nerves surrounding the procerus muscles between the brows. “Over time, the skin will relax, and wrinkles diminish with less frowning,” Dr. Finder shares.

BOTOX® and How It Works

Botox is approved for treating glabella lines as well as forehead lines produced by the corrugator muscles (horizontal wrinkles spanning the width of the forehead), and crow’s feet, the fans of wrinkles extending from the outer corner of the eye when we smile. “So if you have more than a brow furrow, facial botox may be the right injection for you,” notes Dr. Finder. It works in much the same way as Dysport®, blocking the brain’s signals to the nerves and muscles responsible for the expressions that cause wrinkles.

Like Dysport®, BOTOX® injections only take minutes, but the amount of the drug used varies by the size and number of areas being treated.

Comparison

Both Dysport® and BOTOX® injections, like Xeomin in Oklahoma City, OK, are safe, FDA-approved treatments. They’re an excellent, non-invasive option for relaxing the muscles that cause forehead wrinkles, resulting in smoother skin for months at a time. Neither treatment is a permanent solution, but wrinkles become less noticeable, and the injections are more effective than anti-wrinkle creams and serums.

Dysport® has the advantage of faster results, taking effect within a few days of treatment and typically lasting between 3-4 months. BOTOX® treatments have the advantage of being longer-lasting. While it takes up to a week for results to become noticeable, your wrinkles are kept at bay for up to 6 months.

In terms of cost, Dysport® and BOTOX® can vary. However, the required number of injections determines the overall cost, with Dysport® averaging less expense than BOTOX® because of the limited treatment area. “Over time and with repeated injections, it may take less of each prescription to achieve the same results,” says Dr. Finder. “Maintenance sessions, necessary to prevent further expression lines once the effects wear off, are highly recommended with both treatments,” she continues. You can consult experts like Gifted Medspa or eSSe Plastic Surgery – Botox for additional guidance.

No one wants a perpetually frozen or surprised expression from Dysport® or BOTOX® injections.
