Can My Mohs Surgeon Perform Reconstruction?

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

If you will require a reconstructive procedure following your Mohs Micrographic Surgery, you may be wondering whether you should rely on your Mohs surgeon to perform the secondary operation or seek out a plastic surgeon. Every patient’s case is unique and there are many factors to consider before making a decision. Our experienced dermatologist and trained Mohs surgeon, Dr. Adam J. Mamelak, can help you determine which approach is best for your distinctive needs.

Researching a qualified Mohs surgeon is always the first step. Some Mohs surgeons are members of the American Society for Mohs Surgery (ASMS), and others, such as Dr. Mamelak, are Fellows of the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS). The latter organization requires far more extensive training in both Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Mohs micrographic reconstruction. During his fellowship, for instance, he performed over 2000 Mohs surgeries for skin cancer.

Unlike many general plastic surgeons, Mohs surgeons receive focused training in facial reconstruction, specifically for the eyelids, nose, lips, cheeks, forehead, and ears. They also receive specialized instruction on how to restore function while maintaining natural-looking results on the face and skin. Furthermore, dermatologists and Mohs surgeons have contributed significantly to aesthetic and reconstructive medicine over the years, including designing new instruments and technology as well as developing advanced wound-healing techniques.

Experience is essential to consistently offering successful results, and fellowship trained Mohs surgeons learn a broad variety of skills, work with leading surgeons, and receive rigorous hands-on training in reconstructive procedures. They are generally considered experts in cutaneous oncology.

If you have additional questions about reconstructive procedures following Mohs surgery, or if you wish to schedule a consultation with Dr. Mamelak, please contact our office today.
