Chemical Peel After Care

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

The majority of chemical peels fall under certain categories of effectiveness: superficial peels that use Glycolic or Salicylic Acid solutions, and deeper peels that use Trichloroacetic Acid or a blend of different acids. “Superficial peels usually do not have extensive downtimes, but more aggressive peels may require a week of recovery,” explains Amy Bowen, licensed aesthetician at Sanova Dermatology. Deeper peels will require home rest, diligent post care, and pain medication like ibuprofen for mild discomfort.

What Are The Side Effects of Chemical Peels & How Does It Effect My Skin?

Chemical peels will cause the skin to become tender and inflamed, due to the skin sloughing off. Glycolic and Salicylic Acids are derived from sugars and are usually used for superficial abnormalities, like acne or mild scarring. It works by affecting the “glue” between skin cells, making them shed more quickly. “These acids will remove the top layer of the skin, revealing healthy, vibrant skin underneath,” Bowen assures. People who have minor issues with your skin will benefit from repeated applications of mild chemical peels as the effects are cumulative.

When Can I Go Out In Public?

Mild chemical peels will only cause moderate flaking that can easily be controlled with a non-comedogenic moisturizer. “For more aggressive peels, the skin will frost and start flaking for a week or so,” states Bowen. It’s best to stay indoors during this time. If going out, make sure that the skin is properly moisturized with an SPF 30+ sunscreen.

In the later stages of flaking, you can use your own discretion when going to work. If appropriate, take off a few days to allow the skin to completely heal.

When Can I Wear Makeup?

“You can definitely wear makeup just hours after a mild chemical peel,” shares Bowen. Makeup will work for discoloration, but may cause the skin to flake due to the application. Once most of the skin has flaked off, you will be able to wear makeup. ”

What Can I Do To Reduce Chance Of Scarring?

“Do not pick at the skin,” Bowen emphasizes. Cleanse the skin with a mild cleanser, like Elta Foaming Facial Wash. Apply a moisturizer during the day, using vaseline for areas that are uncomfortably tight. Proper post care will allow for the best results and reduce the chance of hyperpigmentation. After the skin has healed, you may experience a bout of acne – this is akin to a purging, with the chemical peel encouraging latent acne to come forth. After this period, you will enjoy clearer, smoother skin.
