Could Thanksgiving Dinner Really Make You Look Better?

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

With the smell of roast turkey and freshly baked pumpkin pie in the air, Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the season of overindulgence. Doctors have warned us for years about the health hazards of overeating and more recently the dangers of too many sweets. But there may be a silver lining when it comes to the Thanksgiving buffet. Many of the foods that make up our traditional Thanksgiving feast have health benefits including making your skin healthier and more beautiful.

Five Thanksgiving foods that make skin glow!

  • Sweet potatoes contain vitamins A, C, and beta-carotene. “This trifecta of colorful antioxidants can give your skin a rosy glow,” explains Dr. Mamina Turegano, board-certified dermatologist at Sanova Dermatology – Old Metairie. Vitamin C is essential for collagen production and strengthens the supporting structure of the skin. According to scientific studies diets high in the sunshine vitamin result in fewer wrinkles and less dryness.
  • Pumpkin is another orange veggie that is chock full of healthy nutrients. Pumpkin contains beta-carotene and vitamin B3. Vitamin B3 increases production of fatty acids and ceramides that keep skin hydrated. Vitamin B3 can also minimize dark spots by preventing pigment-producing melanocytes from releasing melanin.
  • Cranberries are rosy red beauties that are rich in antioxidants called proanthocyanidins. These antioxidants neutralize damaging free radicals and prevent the destruction of collagen keeping skin smooth and supple. Cranberries also have a healthy dose of vitamin C making them a win-win in the skin category.
  • Pecans contain monounsaturated fats that are not only heart healthy but skin healthy too. “Pecans have more phenolic antioxidants than any other tree nut and are known for their potent anti-inflammatory benefits,” shares Dr. Turegano. Pecans are a good source of iron and the amino acid L-arginine both of which are vital for healthy hair.
  • Turkey is still our star performer on Thanksgiving day. Turkey contains low fat, high-quality protein that is essential for healthy hair, skin, and nails. Dark meat contains riboflavin and plenty of zinc. Zinc is an essential mineral that has been shown to prevent breakouts by fighting acne-producing bacteria and reducing inflammation.
