How Do I Treat My Age Spots?

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

If you’ve reached the age where you’re starting to notice more and more sunspots on your skin, be thankful. Hopefully, those sun kisses are proof in this digital era that you’ve been outside living life.

Still, the side effects of sun exposure aren’t always flattering. “Whether you’re looking to diminish the prominence of the freckle-sized discolorations or the more noticeable and larger age spots, here are a few of the top remedies you can consider,” suggests Angie Pennington, certified medical aesthetician at Sanova Dermatology in Austin, Texas.

Bleaching Creams & Skin Brighteners: using a combination of medical strength hydroquinone to suppress the formation of pigment with natural skin brighteners like Arbutin, Kojic acid, and vitamin C is an effective way to lighten freckles, age spots, and melasma.Chemical Peels: Chemical peels are one of the most popular skin treatments available. “While a peel could require some recovery time, depending on the depth, they come with some additional benefits, including smoother skin, a brighter complexion, and fewer wrinkles,” shares Pennington.
  • Laser Treatments: Certain age spots may require a stronger effort to fade or remove. Pigment-focused lasers can be used to target the red or darker spots on the skin and offer a more youthful and even appearance.
  • Sunscreen: The best remedy for age spots is to avoid getting them in the first place, and to prevent further darkening if you’ve already got them. That doesn’t mean you have to hide inside whenever the sun breaks. Rather, just be liberal in use and application of a broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen.

At Sanova Dermatology, we can help you decide what’s best for your skincare needs. Contact us today to schedule an appointment.
