One of the first questions everyone asks about a cosmetic treatment is: When will I see the results? “Different treatments take different amounts of time to see their full effects,” says Dr. Adam Mamelak, board certified dermatologist in Austin, Texas. “Botox for example, takes up to two weeks to see the results. While the effects of dermal fillers are almost immediate after treatment.” So what about body contouring procedures like Coolsculpting?
CoolSculpting utilizes the Cryolipolysis® method to effectively freeze fat cells. “Patients should expect to see about 20-25% reduction in fat cells in the treatment area,” notes Dr. Miriam Hanson, a board certified Dermatologist and cosmetic specialist at Sanova Dermatology. After the cells are frozen, they then are metabolized by the body and disposed of naturally. The number of treatments required to see optimal results will depend on the person, and your physician can provide an individualized treatment plan best suited for your body and goals.
Immediately after treatment the skin has the consistency of a “stick of butter”, which consists of the frozen fat cells. “The frozen tissue is massaged for 2 minutes, allowing the skin to return to its normal shape,” explains Dr. Hanson. There is potential for some redness and numbness after the treatment, that resolves over a few days to a week. Bruising is also possible, but not as common.
“The body naturally metabolizes the frozen fat cells and gets rid of them,” says Dr. Hanson. “This process typically takes 1 – 3 months. Although significantly longer, it has the benefits of no downtime or risks of surgery.”
A treatment plan usually consists of a series of treatments, performed over a number of weeks or months. “The exciting part for me is to see the change in my patients’ bodies at each visit,” shares Dr. Hanson. These results are shown through weight loss, smaller waistlines and dress sizes, and visibly seeing a reduction in fat in the targeted areas.
