Is Powdered Sunscreen Effective?

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

New products are the highlight of any new season, and many of our favorite brands are beginning to release a new type of sunscreen to accompany skincare fanatics to the beach, pool, and park this summer. “When used correctly, as a supplement to regular sunscreen, powdered sunscreen can effectively provide an extra layer of sun protection,” shares Lesley Ott, a certified nurse practitioner at Sanova Dermatology – Baton Rouge.

What Is Powdered Sunscreen?

Powdered sunscreen is an innovative sun protection product that includes the same active ingredients that are typically used in liquid sunscreens, such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, in their natural powder forms. Regular sunscreens combine these powders with other ingredients to create lotions and sprays. “Powdered sunscreen simply uses the same active ingredients to create a new type of sunscreen that is easier to apply and more convenient to travel with,” Ott explains. It is applied with a brush, much like any other type of powdered makeup, and it is most often used on the face.

Is Powdered Sunscreen Effective?

Powdered sunscreen can effectively supplement regular sunscreen when used correctly. They contain the same active ingredients as other types of sunscreen and SPF makeup products, and many companies that have released powdered sunscreen products are continuing to refine their formulas to increase their overall effectiveness. “These products are mainly meant to be used for reapplication throughout the day, not as a complete replacement for liquid sunscreen,” Ott urges.

Applying sunscreen once in the morning is not enough to protect your skin during a day at the beach, pool, or park because it needs to be reapplied after swimming and heavy sweating. “Reapplying sunscreen every few hours can also be a good idea if you are spending most of the day outside, and powdered sunscreen can be easier to apply and less messy to pack in your beach bag or backpack than regular sunscreen,” Ott suggests. Powdered sunscreen can be an effective addition to your summer skincare routine, particularly when reapplying sunscreen to your face throughout the day.
