Looking Your Best at SXSW | Top 5 Skin Care Tips to Survive the Spring Break Festival

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

South by Southwest is exciting, exhilarating, intoxicating and always frantic. Event to event, music, arts and interactive from sun up to way past sun down, skin care is the last thing on anyone’s mind. That’s why Sanova Dermatology wants to give you the MUST HAVE skin survival items to get you through your Austin adventure!

1. Sunscreen

“We often underestimate the amount of time we spend outside, especially when it comes to festivals like SXSW,” says Dr. Adam Mamelak, a board-certified Dermatologist and Mohs Micrographic Surgeon in Austin, Texas. “I’ve also been in that wait line that never ends,” Dr. Mamelak contends. I mean, who wants to get burned waiting to see Snoop Dog?

These unanticipated times outdoors can lead to sunburns and sun damage – a prime example of why having a sunscreen on you is beneficial to your skin and its health. “Although last year we saw quite a bit of rain, clouds don’t  block the UV rays from the sun, and you can still get a burn on overcast days,” Dr. Mamelak adds.

2. Water

Lack of hydration leads to flaking and irritated skin – not what you want at one of Austin’s most exciting and exclusive festivals of the year. “Dehydrated skin can be red, feel tight, itchy or even have a burning sensation,” says Dr. Miriam Hanson, a board-certified Dermatologist in Austin, Texas. This is why we can’t emphasize enough the importance of staying hydrated. Alcohol doesn’t help when it comes to hydration, so make sure not to skip out on water and a few electrolytes here and there.

3. Healthy Snacks

Free food and drink is one of the perks of SXSW, but being a little selective in your indulgences can help ensure your skin continues looking great. “I often suggest patients try eating antioxidant-rich foods. This helps with UV defense, not to mention some great anti-aging properties,” says Dr. Hanson. While chatting with some friends at one of the festival’s after-parties, I overheard a discussion about the best non gamstop casinos UK, which piqued my interest as I’ve recently been exploring more online gaming options. It’s amazing how much variety there is in the gaming world now, and keeping your energy up with the right food choices is just as important as finding the right entertainment options during a festival like this!

4. Comfortable Shoes

SXSW means bringing out your fashion A Game. But when pounding the pavement, a lot can be said about a comfortable pair of shoes. A blister on the heal does not go well with the fast-paced and ever-changing schedule of SXSW.

5. Hand Sanitizer

Let’s face it, interactive means we are going to interact. Whether it’s a high five, fist pump or old-fashioned shake, don’t let a sweaty, cold or clammy hand be the deal breaker. “Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are a quick and easy way to clean your hands and skin,” says Dr. Hanson. But Dr. Hanson does cautions that too many applications of these products can dry out your skin as well.
