Men Under 20 and Over 65 Are At Greater Risk For Skin Cancer

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

A recent study published in the British Journal of Dermatology revealed men under the age of 20 and over the age of 65 are unaware, or ignore proper ways to shield their bodies from the sun’s harmful rays. Women in the same age groups were polled and found to be more aware of the benefits, or actually taking the initiative, of protecting their skin using sunscreen.

Over the recent years, male fatality rate due to skin cancers like melanoma have almost doubled. This study demonstrates that men are becoming increasingly less informed, or more ignorant to sun safety campaigns and education about detriments of unprotected sun exposure.

“Both men and women should be aware of the dangers of unprotected sun exposure, and what failing to apply sunscreen can lead to,” shares Dr. Adam Mamelak, a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon in Austin, Texas.  “Simple applications of sunscreen when getting ready to head outdoors, and re-application throughout the day, can make a major difference in reducing your chances of acquiring skin damage or skin cancer.”

This is where YOU come into play. It is important that you are taking the time to teach your children and loved ones how to take care of themselves. It can mean the difference between skin cancer and a healthy life. Great ways of doing this include becoming informed yourself, as well as sharing information that might change someone’s mind about skipping the sunscreen today.

Pick up an extra bottle of broad spectrum SPF 30 while shopping, and hand it to someone important to you.

Pay it forward.

Through these simple changes, the rates of fatality due to skin cancer can be minimized.
