Microcannula technique minimizes discomfort and bruising with dermal filler treatments

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

“No one likes a needle!” claims Dr. Miriam Hanson, cosmetic dermatologist at Sanova Dermatology. “Whether it’s a cosmetic rejuvenating procedure designed to treat fine lines and restore volume, or even a simple skin biopsy – I don’t think any patient likes the idea of an injection.

Sharp hypodermic needles have been the cosmetic norm for dermal fillers like Juvéderm and Restylane for years, and they are often seen a necessary evil. “It has been and remains and extremely affective delivery system for cosmetic procedures,” explains Dr. Adam Mamelak. “They allow us to place the filler exactly where a patient has volume loss and restore the skin to a more youthful appearance.

Still, many patients do not respond well to these needles. The sharp tips have the potential to damage nerves and blood vessels beneath the skin, increasing pain and discomfort during the procedure, as well as predisposing to more bruising. Needles also cover only a limited amount of space and require multiple injection sites to achieve a desirable effect.

But now, a new and innovative blunt tip microcannula has been developed with that can help reduce bruising, minimize pain, while encouraging the production of new collagen in the skin. It needs only one or two entry spots and, once inserted in the skin, is able to treat a much greater area due to its increased length and flexibility compared to traditional needles. It also works by moving around nerves and vessels, instead of damaging them like hypodermic needles. Needles can disrupt nerves and blood vessels due to their inability to flex and bend within the tissue.

“It’s really revolutionized how we treat our patients,” says Dr. Hanson. “Decreased pain, swelling, and recovery time – who doesn’t want that?”  The blunt tip microcannula acts as a tube and is easily able to maneuver around such sensitive areas and reach a much wider range of area when undergoing treatment with dermal fillers. Whether it’s cheeks, smile lines or even areas off the face such as the hands, this innovation in rejuvenation techniques is a welcome addition to Sanova Dermatology’s practice.
