Microneedling vs. Fractionated Laser Resurfacing: How Do They Compare?

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

As we grow older, our body’s collagen levels begin to decrease and our skin loses elasticity and plumpness, leaving us prone to wrinkles and other signs of aging. There are several dermatological procedures available that can help restore a youthful, healthy appearance, whether by tightening skin, diminishing lines, balancing discoloration, or lightening scars. Two of these highly effective procedures are micro-needling and fractionated laser resurfacing, techniques that utilize unique methods to rejuvenate skin.

Micro-needling

“Micro-needling is a type of collagen induction therapy,” says Dr. Miriam Hanson, Cosmetic Dermatologist in Austin, Texas. “The procedure creates tiny punctures in the skin. These mirco-perforations in turn stimulate the production of new capillaries, collagen, and elastin.” Because the procedure is gentle, people with skin that is sensitive or prone to scarring or pigmentation are suitable candidates. It is also a more economic form of treatment and one with minimal downtime. Micro-needling can significantly tighten skin, improve overall skin texture, and reduce scarring. Patients can generally expect treatment to be completed in less than an hour, and the number of treatments required depends on the severity and type of the condition being treated. Side effects are minimal, including a temporary breakout of acne, mild swelling, or, very rarely, infection, and patients will typically see results in five treatments or less.

Fractionated Laser Resurfacing

Another option available to patients is fractional laser treatment. In this procedure, lasers are directed onto fractions of the skin at a time, called microthermal treatment zones. “Laser resurfacing is able to reach both the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin,” says Emily Johnston, certified physician assistant at Sanova Dermatology. One system, the elōs Plus, actually uses radiofrequency energy to specifically address a number of conditions. The Sublime™ program on the elos is able to tighten loose skin and stimulate collagen, helping smooth skin especially on the face and neck. The Sublative™ procedure can improve discoloration and textural issues as seen in acne scars as well as even out fine lines. Because the skin is anesthetized with cream prior to the procedure, it can take longer to perform laser resurfacing than it does micro-needling. Swelling and pink skin is typical for a few days following treatment.

Microneedling and fractionated laser resurfacing can both be highly effective in correcting skin conditions and restoring a youthful appearance. Our skin care specialists individualize treatments by understanding how these two treatments differ and guide patients on how to choose the best and most appropriate treatment.
