New Year, New Skincare?

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

We hear a lot of mixed messages when it comes to skincare. “If it doesn’t make you break out, keep using it!” some people say. Others think you should switch it up every once in a while. Well, which is it? How often should you switch up your skincare routine? The answer is a bit more complicated than a lot of people realize. Here’s what you need to know about switching up your skincare routine.

Your Skin Needs Consistency

Generally, as stated by Alyssa DiBenedetto, CLT,  the skin needs a consistent approach to care. Now, if your skin is breaking out, getting dry, or otherwise reaction poorly to a product, then, by all means, try something different. When you do try a different product, though, keep in mind that nothing is instant. Don’t give up on a product just because it doesn’t deliver immediate results. “You typically won’t see full results for up to two months,” explains Nikki Donovan, a licensed medical aesthetician at Sanova Dermatology in Austin, Texas. If you’re still not seeing results after a couple of months, go ahead and switch to a different product. Until then, though, have patience with your product.

Seasons Change

If there’s ever a time to change your skincare products, it’s when the seasons change. Your skin may need a few changes depending on the season. After all, different weather conditions will have different impacts on your skin. “If you have particularly dry winter skin, for example, then you may need to add a heavier moisturizer to your routine during the winter months,” states Donovan. Pay attention to your skin on a daily basis so that you can anticipate its needs. You and your skin will both be happier for the effort.

Add Before You Subtract

Maybe your skincare routine is fine overall, but you feel like your skin could use a little something extra. In that case, there’s no need to completely change your routine. Instead, keep your day to day skincare routine the same, and add a specialized skincare treatment. Say that you have acne scars, for example. Your regular routine keeps your skin moisturized, but you need a way to get rid of those scars. “Instead of changing your products, keep what works for you and add a treatment plan such as laser resurfacing or dermabrasion,” Donovan offers.

At the end of the day, the best way to know what your skin needs is to visit an expert. A dermatologist can examine your skin and recommend the products and treatments that will work best for you. Everyone’s skin is different, so it’s always best to take a personalized approach.
