Skin Changes in your 40’s and What To Do About Them

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

All skin is different. Each person ages differently and at a different rate. There are different factors that determine how skin behaves over time. “Sun exposure, environmental pollutants, genetics and habits, even things like a healthy diet and exercise can have an impact on skin,” says Dr. Miriam Hanson, board certified dermatologist and cosmetic expert at Sanova Dermatology.

Common Changes In 40’s Skin

The forties is often a time when people start to notice an aged appearance in their skin. “Many people fear wrinkles,” says Dr. Hanson, “But it’s not just the wrinkles that contribute to an aged appearance.” It’s not just one thing that happens to the skin, but there can actually be several changes.

The outer layer of the skin thickens and dries out. On the surface, skin tone becomes uneven, and redness and dryness can become a problem. Age spots may appear and pores may enlarge.

Hormonal changes can also lead to a loss of collagen, which normally contributes to its plump, youthful appearance. This can make the skin more lax and droopy.  Wrinkles and fine lines also appear. Some of these are related to skin laxity, but other come from overuse of facial muscles over time, known as dynamic rhytides.

“All of these things happen over time. Some of these changes can begin in your 30’s, although many of us can really see them after 40!” explains Dr. Hanson.

What Can You Do?

Two of the best things you can do to care for your skin is avoid sun exposure by wearing sunscreen and keeping skin covered when you’re outdoors. “Dermatologists agree. The sun is recognized as the number one thing that contributes to aging of the skin,” exclaims Dr. Hanson. A healthy diet is another step you can take that will make a difference. Exercise has been found to slow down the signs of aging.

If you are experiencing uneven skin tone, sagging skin and wrinkles, you can also improve the look and feel of your skin through non-invasive procedures such as laser treatment, skin tightening in Bowie, MD, botox, and dermal fillers. You should consult experts like skinlogic – med spa in Severna Park, MD before undergoing one.
