What are the Side Effects of Micro-Needling?

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

Micro-Needling is a newer technology that treats acne scars, sagging skin, pigmentation issues, and texture concerns. While many patients are pleased with the results from chemical peels or laser skin resurfacing alone, there are some that require a customized regime consisting of more than one treatment. “That’s why it’s great to have another option for treating patients,” explains Dr. Miriam Hanson, board certified dermatologist and cosmetic expert at Sanova Dermatology. “We now have another way to help patients attain their goals and provide the absolutely best results for their skin.” This treatment can serve as an alternative to laser and other skin resurfacing.

Micro-needling uses fine-tipped needles to create small perforations in the skin to stimulate the outer layer, produce collagen, and break up scar tissue. This is a popular procedure because it is painless, has little to no downtime, has fast-acting results, and most importantly, mild to minimal side effects.

Side Effects of Micro-Needling:

Localized irritation: Patients may feel a little sore after this treatment. This should subside after a few minutes to hours.

Redness and UV sensitivity: Because micro-needling induces collagen production, redness and slight inflammation can occur. This should only last 1-3 days. It is recommended to avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for a week or so, and it is important to always apply sunscreen.

Dry skin: This skin tightening procedure may leave your skin feeling a bit drier. This can be relieved with a concentrated moisturizer or a hydrating serum recommended by your dermatologist or aesthetician.

Tenderness: Slight bruising and inflammation can cause the area to be tender to the touch. As with the appearance, this should subside within 24-72 hours.

Micro-needling is not suitable everyone.  Patients who have open cuts, wounds, or abrasions on the skin, have skin infections, or a history of keloid or hypertrophic scars should avoid this treatment. Contact us today to schedule a free consultation and see what micro-needling can do for you!
