What Causes Acne?

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

If you suffer from acne, there’s a good chance it has afflicted either your face, neck, chest, and/or back. This is because these areas have the highest concentration of oil glands, which are where the inflammation originates. When sebum, oil, and dead skin cells collect in your oil glands, they cause a blockage that is vulnerable to a bacterial infection–better known as acne. But what led to this skin problem in the first place?

Studies have shown that a number of factors can lead to, or worsen, an outbreak of acne. This list includes:

    • Hormones: the hormonal changes that occur during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause can cause overproduction of sebum, leading to acne flare-ups.
    • Certain medications: Drugs that have ingredients like corticosteroids or androgens can aggravate acne.
    • Stress: During stressful periods, you may notice your skin breaking out more than normal.
    • Diet: Certain foods, such as dairy or carbohydrate-rich products, have shown to make acne worse in some people.

The truth is there are several factors that can contribute to the common skin condition. By identifying what may be causing your acne, you can potentially lower the number of breakouts you experience. Alternately, there are a number of highly effective treatment options available to help keep your acne under control. From over-the-counter topical medications, to more aggressive solutions like Accutane or photodynamic therapy (PDT)–our team of experienced dermatologist can help you find the best treatment option for your needs.
