What Factors Contribute to Cellulite?

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

Cellulite is the appearance of fat pushing on fibrous bands beneath the skin which then gives the appearance of dimpled skin. While both men and women can have cellulite, the phenomenon is more common for females.

What Causes Cellulite?

The exact cause of cellulite is unknown, but medical science has a number of theories. “One idea is that a combination of hormones and age gives rise to cellulite as well as being secondary to the orientation of those fibrous bands under the skin,” shares Jennifer Jordan, an expertly trained dermatology physician assistant that practices at Sanova Dermatology – Pflugerville and Steiner Ranch. It is believed that women have cross-linked fibrous bands whereas men have perpendicular bands and the cross-linking creates a network that causes fat cells to push on the skin creating this appearance.

In addition, as women age, the natural decline in estrogen also causes the skin to become thinner, less elastic, and with more of a tendency to sag, aggravating the appearance. Genetic factors may also determine whether and when at what rate these developments occur.

However, as with all things that concern fat, diet and lifestyle choices can affect the appearance of cellulite. It is also favored that those who eat foods high in carbohydrates, fat, and salt and too little fiber may make the cellulite appear more pronounced. Smoking and lack of exercise can also affect appearance.

Who Gets Cellulite?

“While cellulite seems to be more pronounced as we get older the phenomenon can occur with both men and women of all ages, even teenagers,” states Jordan. It is more prevalent in people who are heavy but fit and trim people can have cellulite as well.

Regardless of your genes, there are many treatment options to improve cellulite, both conservative and invasive. Following a sensible diet, getting plenty of exercises, and avoiding smoking are absolutely helpful but should you desire greater improvement we offer many treatments to help.

Can Cellulite Be Treated?

There are various options when it comes to minimizing the appearance of cellulite, like those offered at Rejuvene MD. Surgical procedures like liposuction are some of the more well-known treatments, but we have seen more options in recent years. One of the newest cellulite treatments is Qwo, an injectable that dissolves the bands that tethers the skin and lessens the appearance of cellulite, this is more of a non-invasive cellulite reduction treatment.
