What is a Cosmeceutical and What Role Do They in Play in Dermatological Care?

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

Cosmetics are a familiar staple of the beauty and dermatology care industry. From familiar products such as lipsticks, powders, skin lotions and creams to blush, shampoos and nail polish, cosmetics are all around us. However, what are cosmeceuticals? And what role can they play in skin care?

Cosmetics are defined by the US Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act as substances that are designed primarily for application to the skin or body for ‘cleansing, beautifying, promoting attraction, or altering appearance’. By definition, then, cosmetics are about cleaning or changing the appearance of the user.

“Cosmeceuticals go beyond this by combining traditional cosmetics with proven, safe pharmaceutical-grade ingredients intended to affect a physical or physiological change in the skin,” explains Dr. Miriam Hanson, a board certified Dermatologist in Austin, Texas. Cosmeceuticals combine the best of both worlds — cosmetics, for improved appearance, and pharmaceuticals, for positive, physical effects – to create products that can not only make you look better, but make your skin more healthy.

What are a few common cosmeceuticals that you are probably using right now? Lip balms with UV-blocking ingredients are extremely beneficial and multi-purpose for both moisturizing and to protect against sun damage. Products like Glo Minerals pressed base make up are great for UV protection and inflammation. Other skin lotions contain growth factors and ingredients to promote collagen production and skin integrity, and many more!

Cosmeceuticals are all around us, and they are being used safely by millions of people every day. “Cosmeceuticals are a known, safe, and proven way to keep your skin young, healthy, and protected while using well-tested and well-proven ingredients that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for your safety” shares Emily Johnston, certified physician assistant at Sanova Dermatology.
