When Will My Acne Finally Clear Up?

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

That’s a question that many teenagers ask as they struggle with the well-known skin condition that mars their skin and elevates their social anxiety. Simply put, the answer is maybe. The endpoint of this common skin problem can range from ones early 20’s to their 30’s, 40’s 50’s or beyond!

“One of the reasons that many teenagers suddenly find themselves with acne outbreaks is because this skin condition can be related to changes in hormones that commonly occur around puberty,” explains Dr. Miriam Hanson, a board certified Dermatologist at Sanova Dermatology in Austin, Texas.

What’s The Cause?

Acne is caused by overactive oil glands that pump out a substance called sebum, which in turn clogs pores and hence causes the unsightly blackheads, whiteheads, and other unsightly pimples. Bacteria are attracted to the acne sites, causing swelling and inflammation.

Acne can be made worse (though not caused) by certain foods, improper skin care, certain medications, and hormonal changes brought on by the menstrual cycle. Some rare acnes can be the result of other medical conditions.

Me, Hormonal?

Whether one has acne or not is largely dependent on hormones. “Acne outbreaks can fade with age though sometimes they can crop up when you are well into your 40’s and 50’s,” Dr. Hanson explains. If you have naturally oily skin and sticky skin cells, you are going to be prone to acne. Hormonal shifts brought on with like puberty, pregnancy, birth control use, and menopause can aggravate the condition.

Working With What You’ve Got!

Fortunately, a number of treatments exist to treat acne. Over the counter treatments can help to remove dead skin cells that characterize acne and help to facilitate the production of healthy, living cells. Some treatments that are applied both topically and taken orally are antibiotics that an experienced dermatologist will be able to prescribe, like Accutane. Your dermatologist may also suggest more aggressive forms of treatment including chemical peels and blue light treatments.

Utilizing products that are designed to cover but not agitate acne is also a great way to help minimize the breakouts that you have. “Glo Minerals created a line that utilizes natural ingredients that are non-comedogenic, and is also soothing to the skin,” Dr. Hanson says. By creating a routine that helps to facilitate your skin type, you can avoid further damage and irritation of your skin!
