When Will Swelling Go Down After Kybella?

June 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

Do your photos highlight your double chin?  Are you bothered by the lack of definition on your jaw line?

Good news! There is a solution to the neck fullness that’s disrupting your profile: It’s called Kybella.

“Kybella is a prescription medication injected by a trained physician over a series of treatments,” explains Dr. Adam Mamelak, dermatologist and skin surgeon in Austin, Texas. “The solution destroys the fat cells that contribute to submental fullness, or what we commonly call the ‘double chin.'”

Perhaps you are wondering about what to expect after the procedure? You may have also heard that Kybella can cause swelling after injected?

Kybella is injected with a small gauge needle, but a number of injections may be required in each session. “We use needles that are slightly bigger than acupuncture needles, to minimize discomfort,” says Dr. Mamelak. The actual number of injections really depends on the size of the patient’s neck. “The injections are evenly spaced. So a patient with a smaller neck would need fewer injections that a patient with a larger one.”

The first treatment will usually produce more swelling than subsequent injections; it is temporary, and the degree and duration depends on the patient. “Typically, a greater amount of fatty tissue in the area will have more swelling,” says Dr. Miriam Hanson, dermatologist and cosmetic expert at Sanova Dermatology. “We have seen a few patients experience a ‘bull frog’ effect, but that doesn’t last very long.”  A younger patient with firmer skin will have less swelling than someone whose skin has lost some elasticity. Mild swelling can go down in as little as 48 hours. Some can persist for longer.

The final result from Kybella is a pleasing, more youthful, contoured line. Improving your appearance boosts your confidence. This can happen without surgery, going under anesthesia or losing time from work or daily activities.
